Russian intellectual ppty service registers Telegram trademark

MOSCOW, Jun 29 (PRIME) -- Russia’s Federal Service for Intellectual Property has approved an application of Telegram Messenger LLP for the registration of the TELEGRAM trademark after the company’s objection, the authority said on Friday in a statement.

The administration of the messenger, which is currently blocked in the country following a court decision, filed an application for the trademark on June 30, 2016, but the service rejected it in August 2017, referring, among others, to the fact that the commonly used term means a textual message transmitted by telegraph connection.

In December 2017, the messenger contested the intellectual property watchdog’s decision, and the authority admitted that the terms “telegraph” and “telegram” have modified hugely.

A sociological poll proved that 85% of respondents associate the word “telegram” with an application for smartphones and tablets to exchange messages. This is why the intellectual property service registered the trademark.
